How to Line Up a Backup Babysitter (Before You Need One)
Childcare falls through at the worst possible moment — a sick nanny, a snow day, a last-minute work meeting. The fix isn't scrambling; it's having a backup sitter (or three) ready before you need one.
Build a bench, not a single point of failure
- Line up 2–3 vetted sitters, not one. The good ones get booked.
- Include a mix: a teen for daytime/short notice, an experienced sitter for the important stuff, and a relative or neighbor for true emergencies.
- Keep their contact info, rates, and availability somewhere you can grab fast.
Make backups easy to say yes to
- Offer a small premium for last-minute calls — it's worth it.
- Keep a ready-to-go info sheet so a backup can step in cold.
- Book them occasionally even when it's not an emergency, so the kids know them.
Have a same-day plan
- Know which sitters take short notice and roughly what they charge (the rate calculator helps you offer fairly).
- Trade backup-care favors with another family on a similar schedule.
- Keep daycare/employer backup-care benefits (if any) on file.
Five minutes of setup now saves a frantic morning later. Build the bench, keep the info handy, and childcare gaps stop being emergencies.
